The reality is that we live in one of the most fire prone areas of Australia, so we must be prepared.
Preparation means many things, but especially:
- Preparing your property – many resources are available to assist you.
- Have a ‘Fire Plan’ – what will your family do if a fire threatens your home?
Preparing your property
CFA produces many useful documents to help you prepare your property prior to each fire season. One of the most useful is Living in the Bush.
Fire Plan
Construct your family’s Fire Plan, also using the information included in ‘Living in the Bush‘. The most important thing is decide in advance if your family plans to stay or leave.
Other Considerations
- Check your Insurance cover – what are you covered for? Fences? Outbuildings? Demolition? Rebuilding? Architects?
- Decide if you are likely to be able to defend your property if the town is under attack – talk to your relatives and neighbours in advance to agree where you will go if not staying.
- Prepare a list of phone numbers – particularly neighbours.
- If you are a member of a Community Fireguard – hold your annual meeting during October/November each year.
- Consider forming a Community Fireguard group with neighbours – pool resources and help each other.
Annual council inspections?
Indigo Council will be conducting inspections to identify fire hazards and issuing notices where necessary.
